Mission Mountains

The rugged peaks of the Mission Range jut right out of the valley floor with no foothills. The daunting terrain of the Missions is dotted with alpine lakes, small glaciers, timbered slopes, and vertical cliffs, ranging in elevation from 4,500 feet up to McDonald Peak, at 9,820 feet. This wild wilderness is a paradise for solitude-seekers.

Glacier National Park

Known as ‘The Crown of the Continent,’ the park’s glacier-carved peaks and valleys running to the Canadian border create more than 700 miles of hiking trails and a route to photogenic Hidden Lake. Crossed by the mountainous Going-to-the-Sun Road, adventurers can enjoy backpacking, cycling, and photography. Bring your camera to get pics of mountain goats, historic chalets, and the sheer rock walls leading to Logan Pass.

National Bison Range

Established in 1908 to protect one of the most important remaining herds of American buffalo, this 19,000-acre natural grassland is the home of approximately 400 of the great shaggy animals. In addition to the bison you may see elk, whitetail and mule deer, bighorn sheep, and pronghorn antelope.

Kerr Dam

Now known as Seli’š Ksanka Qlispe’, the dam was built in 1938 to generate hydroelectric power and to raise the level of Flathead Lake. See the thundering, rushing waters of this massive engineering marvel when you hike down to the dam’s observation deck. You will be rewarded with scenic views of the river, lake and mountains.

St. Ignatius Mission

Visit a unique Catholic church built on the Flathead Indian Reservation in the early 1890s. Its walls and ceilings have 58 original paintings by Brother Joseph Carignano on them. Two of the most distinctive paintings depict the Salish Lord and Lord’s mother in Native American form. Everyone is welcome to worship at historic St. Ignatius or to take a tour and visit the gift shop.
